CalAIM FAQ

What is CalAIM?

CalAIM stands for California Advancing and Innovating Medi-Cal. It's a statewide initiative aimed at transforming California's Medi-Cal program into a more coordinated, person-centered system that addresses not only medical needs but also social factors affecting health, such as housing, food, and daily support.

Whether you’re dealing with health issues, housing concerns, or just need help finding the right services, CalAIM is built to meet you where you are—and support you every step of the way.

Do these services cost anything?

No. All CalAIM services—including Enhanced Care Management (ECM), Community Health Worker (CHW) services, and Community Supports—are free for Medi-Cal members. There are no out-of-pocket costs.

How do I know if I qualify?

Eligibility depends on your health needs, your life situation, and Medi-Cal coverage. Some services are for people with complex medical or social needs, while others support housing, daily health, or well-being.

The best way to find out is to contact us for an eligibility assessment. We’ll help you understand which services you may qualify for.

How long can I get services?

There’s no specific time limit—you can receive services for as long as you need them and as long as you qualify. However, authorizations are reviewed by CalOptima Health and must be approved by them for continued support or to adjust your services to better suit your needs.

What’s the difference between ECM, CHW, and housing services?

Service

What It Is

Who It Helps

ECM (Enhanced Care Management)

One-on-one support from a dedicated lead care manager (LCM) who helps you coordinate your medical, mental health, housing, and social needs

People with complex needs like homelessness, serious mental illness, frequent hospital use, or involvement in child welfare or justice systems

CHW (Community Health Worker) Services

A lighter-touch, one-on-one service to help with health education, prevention, system navigation, and accessing resources

People who need extra help staying healthy, managing a condition, or finding community support

HTNS (Housing Transition Navigation Services)

Help finding and applying for housing, including search support and application help

People experiencing or at risk of homelessness

Housing Deposits

One-time support for move-in costs like security deposits, utilities, or basic safety needs

People approved to move into housing

HTSS (Housing Tenancy and Sustaining Services)

Ongoing support to help you keep your housing, like lease support, landlord mediation, and budgeting help

People already housed who need help staying stable

Does housing support include rent payments?

No. CalAIM does not cover rent, room and board, or ongoing rental assistance. However, Housing Deposits may help with one-time move-in costs, such as a security deposit or utility setup, and HTNS/HTSS provide guidance before and after you move in.

Can I get reimbursed if I already paid for something myself?

No. CalAIM does not reimburse costs you’ve already paid out-of-pocket.

Do I need a doctor’s referral to get started?

No. You can refer yourself or be referred by a doctor, clinic, or community provider.

Will someone meet me where I am?

Yes. We can meet you wherever you’re most comfortable—at home, in a shelter, at your doctor’s office, or in the community—as long as it’s safe for you and the care team.

Will I lose my current Medi-Cal benefits or providers?

No. CalAIM services are an addition to your existing Medi-Cal benefits. You can still see your regular doctors and providers.

Can I stop services if I want to?

Yes. Participation in CalAIM services is voluntary. You can start, pause, or stop at any time.
